Normski played a significant role as an observer during the era recognized as the Golden Age of Rap, a time when prominent US artists such as Run DMC, LL Cool J, and Public Enemy began making appearances in the UK. Concurrently, a British music scene rooted in Black music and diverse multicultural influences was blossoming, giving rise to genres like Jungle, Garage, and Techno.

Describing himself as a "young Black British homeboy photographer," the author found himself in the opportune position to document the emergence of hip hop and rap music, as well as the associated community and social movements, within the UK during the mid-1980s to early 1990s. "Normski: Man with the Golden Shutter" offers a glimpse into Normski's personal journey through this world.

The book showcases Normski's collection of photographs, many of which have rarely been seen before, featuring artists such as Public Enemy, N.W.A., Cypress Hill, De La Soul, Goldie, Ice-T, Run DMC, Wu-Tang Clan, and numerous others. Accompanying these images are the photographer's firsthand accounts and anecdotes from the heart of what would evolve into a profoundly influential cultural movement.
