Art and technology employ various techniques. They can identify subtle signs in different facets of society. These faint signals may reveal new trends or significant changes. They empower us to view the unknown future not as a threat but as a resource for fresh narratives. This compact book, edited by Lukas Feireiss and Florian Hadler and crafted by Studio Yukiko, playfully recognizes some of these "Weak Signals." Functioning as a glossary of novel terms and neologisms, it curates, archives, copies, combines, and compiles ideas, texts, and images using a cut-up technique. It merges human-written and AI-generated texts in a flat hierarchical manner and offers a plethora of hyperlinks forming a complex web of endless references. Weak Signals is the outcome of the seminars "Art and Technology: A Research Network and Weak Signals: New Narratives in Art and Technology," conducted by visiting professors Prof. Lukas Feireiss and Prof. Dr. Florian Hadler at the Berlin University of the Arts in 2022-2023. Supported by Deutsche Telekom AG, these seminars and the resulting publication represent a distinctive case of the Third Mission, enhancing the university's permeability and social impact through dialogue, exchange, and the development of shared vocabularies.
